A better disney than seen for a while - Finding Nemo Reviews
What makes this tacky story so wonderful? Love. A father's love for his son. A father just like me, overprotective, but loving.
We understand Merlin's quirks. Nemo is harder to identify with though Dory is a hoot. Artistically it rates with the better Disney's, the last great one being Beauty and the Beast (I know the Lion King came after B&B, but I didn't like it).
For once, the kid isn't the all smart one and the parent the idiot. Since when did parents get so stupid. In every Disney movie the parents are either dead, evil or just plain old incompetent. Here's one where none fully apply. Nemo's mother is gone, but Dad is here, alive and kicking.
What else powers the movie is love. Not romance, but love. True, family love. Love that will cast out fear, to quote from the God, the creator of the universe. Love which is not interested in kissing or screwing, but love that is sacrificing, serving and insane. The parents love for a child, who can explain it.
Finding Nemo far from explains it, but it reveals it. Its the love that continues to put out posters for a missing child, years after she/he disappears. Its the love the cries to sleep at night at the trouble of the wayward child. Its the love that forgives the defiance that caused the hurt and works to heal the wound, to repair the breach, to make it all better. Love that we haven't seen in hollywood for a long, long time. (and aren't likely to see for yet another long long time.).
In Nemo a child's disobedience proved disasterous. A father's resourcefulness, wisdom fueled by love, saved the day. And the Father too learned, that the child needs a little freedom and must take reasonable risks. Good show Disney. Do it again.
